WE ANSWER YOUR QUESTIONS

What is the difference between V3 and V4 of Ancestry?

At tellmeGen, we constantly work to improve the quality of the service we provide to our users, which includes, among other improvements, the inclusion of new populations.

In June 2025, we began the update to the next version of our ancestry test, transitioning from version 3 (V3) to version 4 (V4). Over the following days, we implemented this version for our users.

This process is free and automatic for users, and they don’t need to do anything.

The main difference is that we went from 53 ethnic populations to 93. The increase in populations, and in our database, has also allowed us to refine the algorithm. For the existing populations, the number of individuals representing them was increased, resulting in a boost in reliability.

We are more specific in calculating users’ ethnicities, thanks to the increase in reference populations and the comparisons we conduct.

Because of all this, some users may notice changes with this new version of ancestry. This is completely normal and does not mean that previous results were necessarily wrong. The new results reflect advances in studies of origins and ancestry, and are therefore expected to be more accurate.

However, if a user prefers V3 over V4, they can keep their old results without any problem and without conditions.
